자연에서 얼마나 많은 재료를 얻을 수 있을까? 우리에게 자연이 준 것은 상상할 수 없을 정도로 많다. 그 자연의 재료들로 만들어진 민속악기를 소개하는데 그치지 않고 직접 만들어보는 시간이다. 동남아시아의 새피리, 아프리카의 칼림바(엄지손가락 피아노),조롱박 딸랑이는 만드는 법이 다소 간단하지만 어린이에게 악기를 만들었다는 자신감과 성취감을 고취시킨다. 조립과정에서 도구를 적극 활용하도록 함으로써 어린이들에게 도구 활용에 대한 거부감을 줄여주기도 한다.

레인스틱은 칠레 안데스 산맥 지역의 전통악기로 비의 신과 소통하기 위해 만들어진 악기이다. 선인장이 주재료이며 타악기(쉐이커)에 속한다. 선인장 가시를 안으로 박아 넣고, 빈 선인장 안에 작은 돌을 넣어 부딪치며 소리를 낸다. 비의 소리가 나며 기우제 때 주로 연주되었다.

조립한 악기는 미술 강사의 지도에 따라 다양한 민족의 문양을 그려 넣어 시각적 교육효과를 극대화한다. 이 과정은 어린이들에게 악기의 구성 형태와 소리 공명방식을 이해하고 원시적 악기 제작 원리를 터득하여 보다 쉽게 창작악기를 제작할 수 있는 계기가 된다. 완성된 악기를 함께 연주할 수 있는 시간도 갖는다. 자신이 만든 악기의 소리 들으며 자연스레 악기제작에 대한 자신감을 얻을 수 있다.

How many kinds of materials can we get from nature? The numbers are great beyond your imagination. The class started with introducing folk musical instruments made of the natural materials and then moved to making instruments. The “Bird Flute” in Southeast Asia, the Kalimba in Africa (thumb-piano) and the calabash rattle were easy to make but the children felt challenged and confidence in doing it on their own. Also, the class has the children felt easy on utilizing tools by careful guidance.

The Rain Stick is a traditional instrument in the Andes region, Chile to communicate with the god of rain. It is mainly made of cactus and belongs to the percussive instrument (shaker). The instrument is made by pushing in the cactus prickles and putting pebbles inside the cactus. By shaking, it sounded like rain-falling and was played in the rain-calling ceremony.

The children painted interesting ethnic symbols under the guide of arts teachers to maximize visual and educational effect. This was a chance for children to understand the structures including the resonating devices of the primitive musical instruments. This would help their job to make crafted musical instruments. Let’s have a time to play the instruments. The children naturally has confidence in making musical instruments while listening to the sound from their instruments.
